Many manufacturing plants (specifically in auto, electronics and hardware industries) have Work-In-Process in which products or parts of a product must go through some type of special testing or customization.

For example, an auto manufacturer may receive requests for customized enhancements and additions not standard to their basic line of vehicles. Somewhere along the production line, these specific vehicles must be pulled aside so that the requested upgrades can be added before they are put back into the finishing production line.

In production lines with Work-In-Process, color and picture coding can significantly decrease the amount of errors and/or time lost determining what needs to be done to what products.

A color-coded bar will help employees quickly identify the products that require special handling and/or need to go down a specific production line. A picture code could further assist the process by making it absolutely clear what customized part needs to be installed or tested.
